COMMUNITREE: a life record for every tree

Tree sponsors usually get one photo at planting and then silence. We built a platform that keeps checking: every tree gets dated visits, growth, survival status and a place on a public satellite map, and every forest gets its three-year care plan generated automatically.

The problem

Corporate sponsors fund thousands of saplings and then have no way to tell which ones are still alive. Most platforms in the market issue a certificate at planting and stop there.

COMMUNITREE wanted the opposite: proof that keeps arriving, that a sponsor can check on their own without asking anyone.

What we built

Per-tree life record

Each tree has its own page: species, planting date, every field visit with photos, growth over time and a clear alive / dead status. Dead trees stay visible.

Satellite map

Every forest drawn on a satellite map with health-coloured pins per tree and the site boundary.

360° forest walks

Field teams shoot 360° photos; visitors walk the site and tap a sapling to open its record.

Field app

A phone app for planters to log visits, measurements and photos on site.

Sponsor portals

Each sponsor sees only their forests, trees and reports, with downloadable quarterly reports.

Carbon estimates

Stock estimates from a published allometric model, labelled as estimates. Never sold as credits.

Plantation operations

Creating a forest generates its full three-year care plan: 49 tasks from deal to closure, each with an owner, a date and a checklist.

Site assessment

A structured pre-plantation survey that converts into a forest project in one step, with area, capacity and location carried over.

WHEN → THEN automations

Rules the team can read and edit, like 'when a survey is approved, then create the planting tasks and notify the field lead'.

How it works

  1. PlantA forest is created with its boundary, species list and sponsor.
  2. TagField staff upload a 360° photo and tap each sapling. Each tap creates the next numbered tree with a pin.
  3. VisitEvery visit adds measurements and photos to the tree's history.
  4. ProveSponsors open the map, a tree, or a quarterly report and see the current state themselves.

Decisions that mattered

The tap is the truth

When a tree's location is modelled from a photo rather than measured, the record says so, at the data layer, so exports carry the flag too.

Publish the dead trees

Hiding losses makes every other number suspect. Dead trees stay on the map; only their carbon is removed.

Estimates, not credits

Carbon is shown as an estimate with the method on the page. Credibility first, sales never.

Encode the ops, don't configure it

The three-year care plan lives in the product as a template, so a new forest never starts from a blank board.

Quick answers

What does the tree platform do?

It keeps a life record for every planted tree: dated visits, growth, survival status and photos, shown on a public satellite map and in sponsor reports.

Who built the COMMUNITREE tree platform?

OIAS Labs designed and built it in 2026 for COMMUNITREE, a tree-planting organisation based in Chennai.

How does COMMUNITREE plan plantation care?

Creating a forest generates its three-year care plan, 49 tasks with owners and dates, and WHEN → THEN automations move work between teams.

Does it sell carbon credits?

No. It shows carbon stock as a labelled estimate from a published allometric model. It does not issue or sell credits.
